Recommendations

It is a gift when one meets the  compassion, intelligence and creativity of Leilani Schweitzer.  Unlike others with these characteristics,  Leilani is able to translate these attributes and her lived experience into action to make things better. She is able to imagine a better world of love, kindness and safety in healthcare and beyond. She is passionate and goal directed in whatever she commits to. This is manifest in her art, her advocacy and her leadership for safe care.  I am humbled and inspired to work along side her and give her my highest recommendation. Her vision and skills in execution are manifest in whatever medium she selects, her fidelity to purpose and to outcome to produce the best~ whether in patient advocacy and Communication & Resolution Programs, art work or speaking and communicating compelling messages.

My perspective  on communication in the healthcare space has been fundamentally shaped by my work Leilani Schweitzer. Before working with her, I was skeptical apologies and explanations could meet the needs of everyone involved in adverse medical events. Now I know accountability and compassionate responses are vital for improving patient safety. Her passion for greater disclosure and transparency changed the purpose and direction of my life.

Leilani takes the intention of disclosure and accountability and puts them into action. She understands the risks and benefits transparency presents to a health care system, as well as, its necessity to patients and their loved ones.

I have seen Leilani present the merits of Communication and Resolution Programs to C-Suite executives and explain the gritty details of implementation to risk managers, patient experience professionals and attorneys. She draws on her years of experience to demonstrate actionable steps to meet the needs of patients, their families, clinicians and administrators after adverse medical events. I appreciate being able to call on Leilani for her guidance.

I first worked with Leilani in 2018 when we invited her to speak for my children’s hospital’s Culture of Safety Day. She was an absolute pleasure to work with from the first contact, through the planning stages, during the actual event as well as after the fact. I have experienced her as thoughtful, creative and adaptive.  She has the ability to balance positivity with honesty. As a speaker, she is very engaging and impactful. As a human being, she is relatable, transparent and kind. Leilani has experienced healthcare from both sides—patient/parent and team member. This makes her a uniquely qualified change agent and educator.

Leilani Schweitzer’s personal experience with medical error has touched the lives of so many people, including mine.  As a medical legal educator, I have shown her TEDx talk ‘Transparency, Compassion and Truth in Medical Errors’ to thousands of grateful nurses across North America. Her podcast, by the same name, on ‘Inside Medical Malpractice’ is consistently one of the top five downloads of all time. Leilani’s focus on the importance of disclosure and transparency, along with her concern for how patients, families and caregivers experience medical error, is invaluable to healthcare. She is gifted with the unique perspective of viewing medical errors from a system point of view, recognizing that we are all part of the problem, and can all be part of the solution.
